I was abandoned, I was lonely
Surrounded by a crowd but felt like an Only
I wanted to die, wanted this to be over
Carrying pails of heartache on my shoulders

A passing moment, or is it forever?
Unraveling like the threads of a worn-out sweater
Undeserving of the gifts I’ve been given
Desperately trying to find a life worth living

How in the world is the world around me
Carrying on, like nothing’s wrong?

How did my mind go and find all the reasons
Reasons that I don’t belong?

And why, in the midst of this pain that I’m holding,
Am I scared but holding on?

I’m finding hope in a new day
I’m not claiming all is better
The seasons change and you can’t stop the weather

But I’m showing up in a new way
Unashamed and unafraid to say
Whether skies are blue or black or grey

It’s taken some time and it wasn’t easy
What I thought would make me happy just don’t please me
And I have been blessed by the kindness of strangers
Keeping my mind from its self-afflicted dangers

Brothers and sisters and children, chosen family, too
Holding the best of me up, when only my best won’t do
Letting the grace and forgiveness work its way through
